Tucson Chiropractors : FAQ
What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that your body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism controlled by the brain, spinal cord and nerves. The 24 bones of the spine, or vertebrae, surround and protect the spinal cord and nerves. When misaligned, or subluxated, the vertebrae can interfere with the nervous system, causing pain and dysfunction. As Tucson chiropractors, our objective is to analyze the spine, locate and correct these vertebral subluxations. The chiropractic method of correction is by specific adjustments of the spine, which are intended to correct vertebral subluxations over time, thereby allowing the innate (inborn) healing abilities of the body to work at maximum efficiency.
What do Chiropractor’s do?
Chiropractors are trained to ensure your nervous system is free of spinal nerve interference. We believe in whole body wellness. Your Tucson AZ Chiropractor, Dr. Harrigan, Chiropractic Physician will discover any spinal nerve interference within your spinal column and with specific chiropractic adjustments, will correct them. Your body will then be free to heal itself, express itself more fully and function at an optimal level. Dr. Harrigan, Chiropractic Physician will also educate you how you can live “subluxation-free” which will prevent you from re-creating the same problems over and over. This is achieved through better posture (during work, sleep, sitting, etc.), diet and nutrition, outlook on life, stretching, exercise and rest leading to a higher quality of life.
What conditions can chiropractors treat?
Chiropractors do not cure disease nor treat specific conditions. Chiropractors remove interference in the nervous system by adjusting vertebral subluxations. When your nervous system is functioning properly, the body is allowed to innately heal itself more effectively. Chiropractors do not chase symptoms! They look for and treat the causes of these symptoms so the symptoms do not return. From prenatal care to sports injuries, Dr. Harrigan, Chiropractic Physician’s goal is always the same — to allow the body to heal itself and function more efficiently by adjusting spinal subluxations (nerve interference).
Do you have to be a certain age to see a Chiropractor?
From newborns to senior citizens, chiropractic is absolutely safe as well as effective. Each and every person is unique and requires a different course of care. Synergy Wellness will design a natural health care program specific to your age, lifestyle and condition. Dr. Harrigan, Chiropractic Physician has safely adjusted newborns just minutes after birth! We have a family practice that helps guide the entire family to better health and wellness. We have had four generations of one family in our adjusting room!
What is the difference between a Chiropractic Adjustment and a Manipulation?
There is a difference between spinal manipulation and an adjustment. Spinal manipulation is defined as the forceful passive movement of a joint beyond its active motion. It does not imply, the use of precision, specificity or the correction of spinal nerve interference. A specific spinal adjustment, on the other hand, is the specific application of force used to facilitate the body’s correction of nerve interference. Chiropractors use specific adjustments to correct nerve interference in your body.
Can I adjust myself?
Because a chiropractic adjustment is a specific force applied in a specific direction to one area of the spine, it is virtually impossible to adjust yourself. Even Dr. Harrigan, Chiropractic Physician cannot adjust himself! With general movement, you can bend or twist and hear or feel a “popping” along the spine which may help release pressure. This is usually counterproductive and can also create areas of weakness and instability. The safest way to adjust the spine is to see a doctor of chiropractic. Dr. Harrigan, Chiropractic Physician went through several years of schooling to be able to adjust the spine in an effective and safe manner.
What are Subluxations?
The body depends on the free flow of nerve communication from the brain, through the spinal column, to every part of the body. When any of these nerve signals become altered or distorted, the vital communication system is disrupted. These neurological disruptions are called subluxations.
What causes vertebral subluxations?
Subluxations are caused by stresses that are experienced, through the nervous system, greater than the nervous system can easily adapt to. Our nervous system is responsible for relating the external environment to our internal environment. Our external environment can be broken up into three main categories; physical things (like trauma, posture, sleeping positions, exercise), chemical things (like nutrition, prescription drugs, illegal drugs, pollution) and mental things (like relationship stress, job stress). Again, when you experience any of or a combination of these stresses beyond your nervous systems ability to easily adapt, you will create a distortion in the nervous system. Chiropractors call this distortion a subluxation.
What are some of the warning signs of subluxation?
Subluxations can cause pain and muscle spasms. However, most of the time, you will not experience any symptoms. Often symptoms such as headaches, back pain, neck stiffness, pain in your shoulders, arms or legs, numbness in your hands and feet and various other symptoms can be signs of subluxations.
How can I try to prevent subluxations?
The number one way to prevent subluxation is to have your chiropractor give you lifetime wellness care. Your chiropractor will also educate you on how the manage the three types of stressors to prevent you from re-creating the same problems (subluxations) over and over.
What is Wellness?
Wellness is: “The degree to which an individual experiences health and vitality in any dimension of life.” Human beings experience stress in 3 dimensions;
- Physical: How you use your body.
- Bio-Chemical: What you put into your body.
- Psychological: The mind-body connection.
How are subluxations corrected?
Doctors of chiropractic are specifically trained to detect and correct vertebral subluxations. Your chiropractor will perform very specific tests; Surface EMG, thermal scan, palpation, orthopedic tests, range of motion throughout the spine, posture analysis, and possibly X-ray.
How long will it take me to get better?
Each person is unique. Because each person is unique, it is difficult to predict how your body will react to adjustments. It depends on several factors including your current lifestyle, how long the problem has been around and your health history. Dr. Harrigan, Chiropractic Physician will provide you with the guidance and spinal corrections that you need, but, your body will only heal as quickly as it wants to. This can take time. Some patients may need occasional adjustments and wellness checks to keep them in balance and to maintain optimum health and wellness. Other patients may require more ongoing supportive care to maintain better health. Contact our Tucson chiropractic office to schedule an appointment today!
